personally, i am smitten next to my Sony v1p. its around US$4000 or so but it's excellent and offers 25p. vitally this means it'll do a perfect job contained by making it look like show. some seasoned camera ops say it's as well brought-up as super 16mm (in the right hands as expected!)
i shot a feature beside it and i was incredibly pleased. the blow up was surprisingly honourable.
as far as budget goes it might be a short time pricey so i would suggest it's little brother the a1 or for cheaper still you could try:
HDR-CX7 (flash memory)
or HDR-HC9 (mini dv)
i would suggest getting something that uses mini dv as i think it still have a lot to proposition including better archiving, cheap price and better res then other formats close to HDD and DVD.

I will second the motion for the Canon HV20. Wonderful little apparatus... The best and the most budget friendly camcorders are at probability with respectively other.
