Canon Rebel XTi! I have a Nikon D1x. I love it, it's an elder model, and very cheap now. You could get a D200 for give or take a few the same price as I compensated for my D1x two years ago, and that is what I'd procure today.

The Canons, as long as you get the xxD series, the current one human being the 40D, or better are also great. I wouldn't recommend the Rebel/xxxD models except for the most casual user. If I be buying one, I'd rather receive a lightly used 30D (last year's model) than a brand fresh Rebel XTi.

The Sonys are very nice, they verbs Minolta's lineage and as such are compatible near all Minolta Maxxum/Dynax/alpha lenses. Minolta optics are superb, as well-mannered, if not better than Nikon/Canon. They also hold built in Image Stabilization, accumulation that feature to any lens attached to them.

Pentax models own a few distinct features, being the Pentax K-mount, compact size, and, resembling the Sonys, built in Image Stabilization. The Pentax cameras are compatible beside all Pentax K mount lenses made since the 70s, and elder screw mount lenses for the old Spotmatic series via an adapter sold by Pentax (avoid aftermarket Chinese and Russian made adapters).
