If you can't afford a Canon EX flash, you may try Sunpak auto 383. I use it beside my Sony V1. It is only $80. However, it does not support E-TTL. You entail to set to a fixed aperture such as f/4.0 and 1/60 sec in encyclopaedia mode. The flash will fire with the correct amount of restrained automatically.

See the link below. They are kind of pricey because they own features that only your Canon camera can use. Third-party flash unit have two drawbacks. 1) they do not communicate near your camera in any expressive way and 2) may own to high a trigger voltage (Canon uses a 6v trigger voltage on their digital cameras) which can fry your cameras electronics (not covered by warranty)

See if you can find a used Canon flash to some extent than buying a new third-party flash.
