...do I have to hold a card reader in proclaim to upload the pictures onto my computer's hard drive? Or can I simply plug a usb cord into my camera, and upload them that mode?

No, you can basically use the USB hook-up that your camera has built-in. If you're trying to verbs photos onto someone else's computer while travelling though, good luck. Each camera requirements its own driver software so that a computer will recognize it as a device. Not so when you use a card reader.
Plus, I get hold of faster transfer rates when I use a card reader . The guts of the camera can be a bottleneck. My coarse files are over 13 Mb, and I transfer 2Gb at a time so speed is king. Go near a card reader and you won't be disappointed. They're inexpensive anyway. Hope this helps. I see others enjoy posted with similar opinion.
Most cameras own a built-in port for a direct usb connection from your camera to your computer. This make it easy for nation to transfer their photos to a safer storage milieu.
To have more room on your camera, obtain a 2 GB sd card for it. Lots of room for pics that way. And receive some extra batteries too (you're gonna want 'em!) All cameras own USB connectivity, so you don't really need to buy a card reader.
But, within order to upload metaphors to your computer, you will probably need to install the software that come with your camera.
However, if using a card reader, you won't requirement to install the software because the computer should recognize it as a removable drive. This make it easy to verbs images (or any file) to any computer.
When you buy a brand alien memory card, you will need to format it (check your user instruction manual on how to do this).
And, everytime after you upload/transfer all similes to your computer (and you want to delete all similes from the card) you should then format it again.
If you don't format your memory card regularly, next your memory card may become corrupted or develop errors.
A 1-2GB memory card is a good dimensions, which will allow room for plenty of images and/or movies.
I like using a reader, contained by fact I havent hooked a camera directly to my computer since the 90s when i have a Logitech with non-removable memory you HAD to hook to your computer via serial port.
Either way, you can plug your camera surrounded by to your PC or use a card reader. Buy a couple of 2 or 4 G cards they inexpensive and you will always be prepared if you steep a card up and can't download right away.
