I say Cannon.
They can be pricey but if you want a right camera to last you somewhat longer than a year or two go for Cannon. it sounds close to you are wanting a compact not an slr so I would recommend the olympus stylus brand for the quality of olympus chalice as well as it's weatherproofing and winterproofing is great and the price is right. I own an olympus DSLR and would vouch for olympus no concern what type of camera you are looking for.
