this site might help....but may i suggest the canon a570 IS
You will have to detail us what your goals are and what subjects you are going to be shooting.

Someone who is shooting landscape will need a different camera/lens combination than someone shooting sports or wildlife I would recomemnd canon. If this is your first camera, try buying A-Series or cheap SD-Series
First establish what's the size you prefer.
More than 6 Mega-pixels depends on whether you want to enlarge to more than 8.5' by 11".
More than 3x Optical Zoom, individual if you 'really' want to bring those far away objects closer.
Image Stabilization: a plus feature that you should pick, so your pictures would be sharp even if you move the camera.
Being your first camera, first buy an inexpensive one, 6 month subsequent if you find that it's not good adequate, at that time buy a better one. You'll end up beside two cameras, for the price that it'll cost you for the better one if you buy it today.
Go to http://dpreview.com and read more or less the different kinds of cameras, read the reviews, compare the cameras side by side. When you deem you know what you may wish to buy, travel to a real camera store ( not Best Buy or WalMart) and pedal the different cameras, talk to the sale person, and buy what fits you.
