Thermal Cameras?

I heard you could acquire a thermal imaging camera for cheap/free by asking your local fire dept. for a working but not-used anymore thermal camera. Could they really achieve sued for giving it to you? Why? What kind of "cheap" would this be contained by US Dollars?
