I recently bought a Canon 450D DSLR camera.
but...

when i use auto-focus (half press shutter button) it focueses and later the built-in flash just flickers on and past its sell-by date until i take the photo. and it doesnt flicker within time its just arbitrary.
so its not on>off>on>off every millisecond or something its in recent times random

is it supposed to do this? im thinking it may be to backing it focus.

any help much appreciated.

Probably the best model is to read the manual thoroughly. You will find that if you know the elemental functions of what your camera can do, you will be able to use it to the fullest potential.

The info re: flash is on page 99. The Canon uses the built contained by flash for two other things besides flash: 1) as an autofocus assist and 2) as a red-eye reduction bedside light.

It's possible, based upon your individual settings, that you own one or the other or both active, which would explain your flickering flashes.
