You can do more cropping next to the 10mpx camera so the d40x is going to be a better choice... They'll both make great pictures at any sensible print size.
You might consider a second lens if you're shooting field sports.
Nikon's 55-200 VR would be a suitable choice if you want to keep the cost down.
