Canon EF-S 17-85mm vs 18-55mm IS gear lens?
I'm planning to purchase the new Canon Rebel XSi. I'm somewhat mixed of which lens to purchase. The 17-85mm offers USM, full-time brochure focus, better build quality, wider and better zoom. The 18-55mm IS kit lens is lighter, have a 4-stop image stabilizer (versus the 3 stop on the 17-85), faster (f/3.5 versus f/4) and is newer. It doesn't hold USM, full-time manual focus, narrower and lower zoom, and cheap build power. Many people and reviews utter that this lens is superior in emblem quality, surpassing the 17-85. The 17-85 suffers from vignetting and fringing and softness at lower f-stops. Price-wise, I will be paying $200-300 more for the 17-85.

Canon EOS400 - AE Lock?
According to the book I have, when I want to use the AE lock I involve to point the camera to the part of the scene that I want to be exposed correctly, and afterwards press the shutter button halfway down. It after says that the exposure is displayed within the viewfinder. I am very especially new to photography, so my apologies contained by advance for the rough question. All I can see contained by the viewfinder is the Aperture, the shutter speed and someting called the Maximum burst. Where should I be seeing the exposure, or is this significance all of the above information. The exposure settings person a combination of the aperture and shutter speeds?
