You won't be able to do email, internet certificate, IM, or MMS with out have the data collection. Well it really depends on what you plan to do next to it. If it is just voice and texting and picture messaging(if getting curve 8310) you merely need your supporting voice and messaging plan. But if you want to use email and internet then you would obligation some form of a data plan.
