i am planning on buying an ipohne..if i unlock it and activate it..next to a sim card but it isnt registered or anything..does it activate the sim card to sort the iphone calls free?

Activation in recent times bypasses iTunes (iTunes will only produce if you have AT&T). Unlocking bypasses the iPhone adage "wrong SIM card" and lets it bring back a non AT&T signal
It's the same as unlocking any other phone.
