I enjoy found that the best value mobile phones are the prepaid deal. You obviously get hold of a prepaid card with it, which may be what you want. If it isn't, later you can use it up and then a moment ago use your previous sim card (if you had one), as you usually would.
There are some apposite Nokia phones for $99. They can be found at Telstra Shops, Woolworths, Big W, Harvey Norman..just to first name a few locations.
Goodluck. I have be in equal situation and found this to the best option. Well, walk into your local dealer and ask for a 3G phone stock that they have. That will endow with you a idea. Most cost underneath $200 and will last a long time, so will the "3G" exchange cards because it's a new concept.
If you are next to Telstra you can upgrade to a new prepaid phone on their 3G grating called "Next-G".
Whether its prepaid or plan mobiles your into, both option are on most providers 3G phones.
My personal favorite brand is Nokia.
