Depends on the activity. If you look in the option or preferences for the game itself, it might hold a setting to remove those.
Many games now put black bar on the top and bottom if you are using a regular tv to force the widescreen view of gameplay. If the activity has no resort to avoid it, your only other recourse would be to look at your tv settings and see if it have a mode that stretches widescreen pictures to fit a regular ratio.
Failing those two options, I'm afraid you're stuck beside them for some games.
im pretty sure nearby is because i have forza 2 and it plays contained by full screen while a friend also have it on a non-wide screen tv and it have the black bars. jump into the console setting and check under video. or perchance it could be under you preferences No, they are designed for widescreen, if your TV doesn't have widescreen and you want to see ALL the detail after you have to enjoy those black bars so you can see the intact widescreen picture - or else the sides of the peak would be cut off and you will lose detail that may be historic to playing the game.
