Answers: It's call Analog To Digital conversion or A2D conversion. With 16-bit processing, you're taking 2 states (On/Off or Hi/Lo) and using every combination of 16 characters. Basically that's over 65,000 combinations. With human hearing running approximately between 20 hz to 20,000 hz, you can preview every 1/3 of 1 hz and assign a binary value to it. Much, MUCH finer than human audible range can even detect. And the louder the level of that tone, the more the binary importance repeats. Then you burn those values microscopically onto the disc.
To play it back, the reverse take place. The laser reads those microscopic digital values, which are later converted back to the analog (D2A conversion). Essentially your player is a miniature synthesizer which generate audio frequencies based upon digital values, which drives the amplifier and speakers.
The technology have been around for more years than most of us here. The problem consisted of two issues. The incredibly lofty cost of precision lasers, and the sheer magnitude of digital circuitry. With the advent of low-cost microprocessor chips contained by the 1980's, along with the proliferation of laser technology, the cost of optical audio (and eventually video) become affordable to the consumer marketplace.
