what do I do? I even disconnected the damn thing from the ceiling. THe mobile and all and it is driving me crazy. Should I shoot it? What?

Take the battery-operated out of the unit.
They still have a backup battery-operated. They would be worthless if the power went out wouldn't they? But trust me they adjectives have battery in them. Just try to lift the thing apart as much as possible. And if it wasn't connected to set off with how could it be chirping? haha. Good luck. Maybe look up the model number online of that detector.

Hi Dick. a chirping smoke alarm usually method that the batterys going flat or your house is on fire. Disconnect the freestyle by unpluging it that should stop it chirping if not view out it may lay an egg Get a new 9volt freestyle plug it in and and your worries are over Even after removing the freestyle, some will still chirp for a while, as there is still a capacitor that will hold some charge for a while. It will stop surrounded by a few hours or less...
