I purely came across a site that sends you a Playstation 3 for free! I'm order mine right now.
You allready answered the ask... blu ray won... ps3 is the channel to go. However, if you want to buy a blu stream player, just lurk for xbox prices to come waaaaay down, since microsoft has to unload them adjectives now at a cheaper price. I won a contest and bought a discounted xbox from amazon and I love it. I wouldn't have bought one for more than $220. It's be nothing but great for the ending 3 months, but most people own trouble with their 360's after 2 years of use (red ring of annihilation affects many, but in that is a 3 year warranty for this now). The games I have are great (Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Assassins Creed, Rainbow Six Las Vegas), but you can draw from 3/5 of them on PS3 and they look the same (my friends own PS3 so I've seen/played them in action). Mass Effect be great, so I was glad I be to be able to play it (it won't be on PS3 as far as I know, but it is coming to PC; PS3 is probably a concern of time, but I haven't read anything about it). Halo 3 is ok, but singular great if you do co-op. Call of Duty 4 looks and plays amazing on both the 360 and PS3 (both single player and online); same with Assassins Creed and Rainbow Six.

Two factor that the xbox have over PS3 right in a minute are achievements and the controller. Achievements don't parsimonious anything, but many are fun to capture just because, and it give you a reason to replay a activity. The xbox controller is amazing; the only piece they could work on is the D-Pad because sometimes it doesn't react correctly, but not masses games extensively use the D-Pad anymore. The PS3 controller sucks for me because it is too light, my thumbs hit respectively other when I play (especially in COD4), it doesn't jolt (for now, the vibrate controllers are coming out this year I believe), and the six-axis hasn't really added anything significant to the gaming experience.

The PS3 is picking up steam though. Providing achievements for games is only just a matter of time (are they already out?). They provide free internet (for now), as anti $50/year for xbox. Xbox has nice online features and movies to download, but this depends on your nouns; it took me many, oodles hours to download Pirates of the Caribbean 3 before I could study it. The PS3 has a built within Blu-ray, which is fairly significant if you hold, or are planning on buying, a HDTV; especially if you have a TV than can utilize the 1080p experience. Right very soon individual Blu-ray players are about $250 for the cheapest model, so getting the PS3 is arguably other. Even if you don't plan on buying Blu-ray DVD's, the player still upscales your regular DVD's, which is important for watching on a HDTV. Also, base on the PS1 & PS2, playstations last a long time and hold continual support. Microsoft pulled the plug on the first xbox pretty quick, and I wouldn't be surprised if they do equal with the 360 (obviously I hope they don't). The PS3 is significantly quieter than the 360.

Back to your question. You will not be able to play near your friends online if you have a PS3 and they own a 360. Both systems have similar graphics right presently, and probably will for a while. So the key differences are Blu-ray (PS3 wins), controller design (xbox wins), reliability (PS3 win for now, I suppose the adjectives could somehow turn out different), and games (personally, I think the xbox winter sport experience is ahead for now).

I'm sure there is more you can capture involved in next to both systems, but I don't do much with the systems except play games on-and off-line and watch the occasional DVD.
I prefer ps3(blu ray).
PS3 is the better rumble for your buck, especially if you get the 80GB one that is to say backward compatible beside psOne and ps2 games. XBox 360 doesn't come with hd-dvd, you enjoy to buy an extra add-on to go and get it.
PS3 has the better graphics and is downright more fun to play next to its sixaxis controller. I used to have both systems hooked up to my tv, but i never played the XBOX.
You won't regret the PS3
