3 pin plugs?

On a standard uk 3 pin plug does the pin at the top(or bottom I suppose) that is on its own, serve any purpose bar for extra support. I have one attached to a speaker system that have snapped right off(it seems to be newly plastic) - can I plug it in and use, beside only the 2 pins subsequent to eachother (the ones with the metal tips)

Answers:
The pin at the top of the triangle is the Earth connector apart from that it also open the shutters that cover the Live and Neutral connectors on the power outlet
on a standard UK 3 pin plug the single one is the floor
So if it's plastic anyway it's fine as you get that on greatly of things............On ones with Metal Pins it MUST be wired !!
3 pin plugs cost smaller quantity than a quid each!!-go and buy one you tight-arsed git!

and it will be safer.

If within doubt replace the plug and do not use just two pins. yes.
if u own the 2 pins (that are next to respectively other) then it should work.

what u hold to do though, is make the plug 'think' (for want of a much better word) that the 3rd pin is still nearby.
what i do i fold up a piece of card, like a train ticket, and fit it into the 3rd pin socket. (obviosly, dont use something made of metal)

hope that works!
