Answers:

the just thing stopping me from getting a projector is the replacement bulb cost, sometimes 3/4 the cost of the projector. my mate have one and he used to run it all the time, even used his computer on it. The only crucial issue is lamp go and replacement cost. Basically, lamps cost $300-$500 (depending on projector) and closing 2-4000 hrs. Lifetime is longer if used with watchfulness (for example no rapid on/off cycles, minimize the number of on/offs -- see link).

Other than that a projector is by far the best mode to get a great BIG picture.

Prices ebb and flow from $500 to over $100,000 ... but realistically even a 1080p projector can be purchased for $2000. See 2nd and 3rd link for reviews. info, etc).

I use a projector for HDTV viewing and movies. I see no source not to use in a bedroom ... contained by fact several posters on fora I frequent own projectors in their bedroom.
Projectors is the safest for your eyes out of adjectives existing technologies - it is a simple care of light bad the wall.
If cost and size your only concerns - travel with the projector. For the difference contained by price, you can buy a new projector avery few years - and still be ahead.

One more issue to consider is the aficionado noise from the projector. And the certainty that you have to hang on to the room dark.

One word a watchfulness - a lot of those mistakenly think that characteristic is not as important as size. Size MANDATES part! Once you get yourself a 75" eyeshade, and see the difference between SD and HD programming, it will be making the difference.

So try to get an HD projector - you can acquire 1080p projectors now for underneath $2000, 720p - for under $1500. (See previous answers for model suggestions)
Yes, LCD have a longer life expectancy that plasma. Plus the store you buy it from should tender a cheap warranty for the light bulb that lights the LCD.
