I have a home cinema amp, DVD player. That have an RS232 socket on. But how do I use it.
I understand that its better than IR control because the comms is 2 track...is this right.

I'd guess it's to allow you to connect it to a PC (probably an old-ish one next to an equivalent connector) and update the software. I can't see why you'd use it instead of an IR remote control - you'd need a cable and a PC, just about convenient!
You need to buy the chain which you connect i think its manly and female. RS-232 controls are used by professional installers in home-theater installations.
For example, within a console, there would be the picking "watch movie". When you press it, it turns everything on, set the input of the TV to DVD, etc.
You can do impossible to tell apart with a remote that can convey discrete codes (like Pronto or Harmony).
