Answers:
Your standard-def heir does not provide high-def signals, nor does it support a HDMI cable.
You need to give the name DirectTV and upgrade to a HD unit. This will own a HDMI output.
Hint: Take the Monster cable back, after your upgrade, attain a less expensive cable from BlueJeans or MonoPrice.
On the back of the TV, here are a lot of places to plug stuff within to. Plug it into the one that has HDMI written close at hand it and looks like something it would fit surrounded by to. If you have a Panasonic, the port is toward the middle.

if your HDTV have HDMI input within the back you individual need to connect the HDMI cable because the cable ratify audio and video(sometimes need to be set surrounded by tv and receiver to know how to pass audio through the cable).
Unless you own an a/v receiver if you want surround nouns you have to also connect the digital audio out optical cable from the directv to the a/v addressee.
