Any luck that within will someday be a VCR/Blu-Ray HD combo player on the open market?

Why would anybody want that? The VCR is already dead. There is a possibility it might happen but since Blu-ray, HD and DVD are taking over it might not come to pass since the demand for VCRs and tape are becoming less and smaller number.
If it was going to come out, it probably would own already.
Its right subsequent to the aisle with the totter to reel to mini-disc converter dual deck.....
A Blu-ray / VHS combo make no sense ... why match low-SD and high-HD point together?
On the other hand a Blu-ray player/recorder or even a Blu-ray player / D-VHS recorder combo MAY be a possibility.
