Your ears can not tell where on earth the low frequency sounds are coming from. Anything below 60hz is supposed to be non-directional. Your room may determine the placement. The sub might sound better surrounded by different locations based on the room.

So by sending the bass signals to a separate speaker, they be able to get the speakers smaller and also have individual one unit that played the low bass. While you CAN put it anywhere, subwoofer placement is a more complicated topic.
