Yob pretty much covered it, I can solely add that I own run into DVD players that will read single layer 4.7 GB DVDR both + and -, but discard to play anything on a dual layer 8.5 GB DVDR.
for a recorder dvd try DVD+ There is no single format which is guaranteed to play on any DVD player. Don't use DVD rewritable discs and that leaves you with DVD+r or DVD-r and of the two DVD+r will be playable on most (but not all) DVD players.
To advance the chances of compatibility you should also transcription at a low speed and of course use lofty quality discs (look for taiyo yuden).
