Radio Shack sells a gadget which allowed this. It connects to the phone queue and a cassette recorder. Whenever the receiver is picked up, it begin recording. When it is hung up, the copy stops. And there is no sound the horn or anything that could give it away to anyone on the other stop. It's fairly inexpensive too.
