I got a missed beckon from a number. I have tried to name it back but it rings and later makes strange noise! Can I find out who the phone number belongs to?

Have you dialled 1471 - then tried Googling the number. The strange boom - is it a long tone? Probably a fax line. sounds like it's coming from a fax contrivance

It may be from a call nucleus that call several numbers at once and abort the ones near no reply. (Don't worry they want you to buy something) or as the previous human being mentioned it could be a fax number (who most likely also want you to spend money)

There is no decriminalized "reverse directory" in the UK. Actually, I don't even know of an 'illegal' one any.
If this persists next you could report it to BT and ask them for help; but it sounds as if you are individual called by a fax gadget or some other device with a modem.
