For standard definition TV, SCART is in the region of as good as it get. Yes the standard's not perfect, but it is the best agency of getting all the signals including widescreen switching between devices lacking a mass of cables. Component have similar quality at standard definition, but no trouble-free widescreen swicthing control.
For HD it's a different matter. You really inevitability HDMI. Component is almost identical to HDMI within most situations, but again you don't get widescreen switching and there's no support for copy protected programmes or devices.
No, they are the worst designed article I can think of, how they've become so adjectives baffles me, but no, there's no better alternative. Scart leads transmit an analogue signal. HDMI transmit a digital signal. For the best results, use the front for the type of signal your system is sending. HDMI has the pre-eminence that it doesn't keep falling out of the socket.
Scart have its ups an dows but comparing it to the hdmi theres not compettetion there.. but save for that like the guy above said scart is better than standard!
